Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. Excellent late example with cruciform plan and with a square plan tower placed on the southwest facing corner of the principal facade. Both the corners of the tower and of the main block of the church have stepped corner buttresses set at angles to corners. All windows and doors have painted-arch openings with exaggerated dressed cut stone voussoirs. The gable ends of the cross gable roofs have simple parapets topped with cut stone coping. A single large pointed arch stained glass window lites the south end of the nave to the left of the main entrance and is composed of four large lancet windows topped by three quatrefoil windows formed out of the tracery. Similar though smaller windows lite the sides of the nave and the transept. The interior of the church is in excellent and largely original condition and has simple plaster walls and a superb wooden cathedral ceiling supported by massive beams. The stained glass appears to be largely original, as are th epulpit and the pews. When Johannes Hall was built next door (BR 84/19) the church was connected to the hall by a short flat-roofed hyphen sided in stucco and having a cronellated parapet. Architectural/Engineering Significance Christ Episcopal Church is an excellent example of its style and is in almsot totally original and extremely well maintained state. Most of Green Bay's historic churches have been altered in some significant way due to changes in the liturgy or changing needs and taste. As a consequence, unaltered churches have a high value. Christ Church, with its handsome interior, is one of the best examples to survive. #650: Parish (84/19) and Rectory (84/18) |
