Additional Information: | This two story side gabled house features a rectangular shaped plan configuration, a stucco foundation, an asphalt and aluminum/vinyl sided exterior, and an asphalt shingled gable roof. Two entrances appear on the facade, as do two-over-two second story windows and two first story picture windows. The former hotel building, which is in fair condition, was built in 1846 with an addition made in 1984. (See Bib. Ref. A). The structure functioned as a hotel from 1846 to c. 1880. Historical Background: This two story frame building is one of the oldest extant commercial buildings in the former village of Barton. The building was constructed as a hotel in 1846. During this time it catered to the large number of excursionsts who passed through West Bend and Barton on their way to Milwaukee or Fond du Lac. After the Chicago & Northwestern railroad erected a depot immediately adjacent to Commerce Street, the hotel appears to have been used by patrons of the railroad, thus the hotel was remaned the Northwestern Hotel. Architectural/Engineering Significance: This property meets criteria C of the National Register requirements because the property retains enough of the character that it had when the town of Barton was growing and developing. This building contributes to the whole character of the Barton Historic District. |
