Additional Information: | ORIGINALLY HAD A TURRET ON THE NORTHWEST CORNER. BUILDING WAS LATER OWNED BY THE MANITOWOC GAS CO. AND RENAMED THE GASCO BLOCK. Intact Roman Ionic pavilions on all sides; dome on square base. The Manitowoc County Courthouse was built in 1906 to replace the outdated 1857 courhouse. It was designed by local architect Christ H. Tegan in the Beaux Arts style and stands out today as undoubtedly the most elaborate of public buildings in the City. A more detailed description of this building can be found in the National Register of Historic Places nomination form on file with the State Historical Society in Madison. Brick corbelling round arch windows altered first story. This building is a two story cream brick commercial structure dating from 1893. The first floor store fronts have been remodelled; however, much of the second floor remains intact with the exception of the windows which havve been replaced within the existing casements. Window panels are inset between brick pilasters. Checkerboard pattern arched brick panels are found over each window. A corbelled cornice is found on both street facades. This building was built in 1893 as the homke of Henry Esch Sons Co. Henry Esch immigrated from Germany in 1853 and eventually arrived in Manitowoc in 1855. He started a general store in that year which was continued in operation until 1926. Esch's original store was at Ninth and Quay Streets. In 1867, he moved to this location and the present buiolding was erected in 1893. Henry Esch was one of the early with the Schuettes and Osuld Torrison remained in business in the City throughout their lives. Although not a prominent outside of buisiness at the others mentioned, Esch should be recogized for his contribution to the commercial development to the City. |
