Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. A late Queen Anne residence. Characteristics include irregular massing, use of both clapboards and shingles, and the cantilevered gable which suggests a tower. The classically detailed verandas and more formal facade suggest a Colonial Revival influence. A fine carriage house is also present (photo code 57-10). This house was originally built with a second and separate residence on the second story. Gilbert H. Gikling was the original owner of the house. Gikling worked in the lumber mills and went on logging ventures in the Northwoods. In 1910, he was a filer for the Linderman Box & Veneer Company. The Gikling House was a weekend meeting place for neighborhood residents where dancing and food were provided by Pauline, Gilbert's wife. The corner that the house rests on was once a small commercial area and provided a perfect center for the community. The house has been continuously owned by the same family since its construction. Pauline and Gilbert Gikling passed the house onto Harvey and Faye Gikling (Harvey being their son). Harvey and Faye Gikling passed the house onto the present owners in 1994. 2016- "This house exhibits many of the Queen Anne style characteristics and features including an asymmetrical facade with multiple gables, a combination of finishes that include clapboard and patterned shingles, and ornate turned and scroll sawn porch details. Gikling worked in a lumber mill in Eau Claire and ventured on logging expeditions to the northwoods. In 1920, he worked as a filer with the Linderman Box and Veneer Company. The house was still in the Giking family in 2002." -"Eau Claire Landmarks: Designated Historic Properties in Eau Claire, Wisconsin", Eau Claire Landmarks Commission, P.O. Box 5148, 2016. |
