Additional Information: | THE BUILDER WAS VANAKEN. ORIGINALLY, THE PROPERTY HOUSED THREE STORES. THEY OPERATED A MERCANTILE STORE ON JAMES ST., A GROCERY STORE ON THE CORNER, AND SOLD THE OTHER TO JOHN SWARTHOUT, A DRUGGIST. THE FRONT PORTION OF THE DRUG STORE, WHICH WAS THE LEFT-HAND STORE ON LUDINGTON, BECAME THE POST OFFICE WITH SWARTHOUT ACTING AS POSTMASTER FROM 1872-1893. "Swarthout came to Columbus from New York in 1846. In 1848 he secured a large shipment of drugs and started the first drug store in Columbia County on East James Street. In 1872 he purchased the left-hand store on Ludington for his drug store and the front portion became the official Post Office with Swarthout acting as postmaster from 1872-1893."
