Located adjacent to the Wisconsin Central railroad tracks on the north side, this brick wholesale building rises two stories above the street. Constructed in a primarily utilitarian mode, the building exhibits features common to the Early Twentieth Century Commercial Style, including a broad brick facade, contrasting concrete details, simple window openings and a shaped parapet capped with concrete coping. This property is a contributing member of the Marshfield Central Avenue Historic District under Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. It is representative of the Architecture Theme of the Wisconsin Cultural Resource Management Plan as an example of Early Twentieth Century Commercial Style architecture. The building's architectural integrity is high. This is the only remaining wholesale-related structure within the commercial core of Marshfield. Built in 1920 to take advantage of the location, it originally served the S. Miller Fruit and Cold Storage Company. By 1946, it was used by the "Marshfield Cold Storage Company". The 1925 and 1946 Sanborn Insurance Maps show a short spur railroad track extending from the main line to the side door of the building. Little is known regarding the history of cold storage in Marshfield. This property is a contributing member of the Marshfield Central Avenue Historic District under criterion A of the National Register of Historic Places. It is representative if the Commerce Theme of the Wisconsin Cultural Resource Management Plan as an example of a wholesale building providing Goods and Services. |
