Additional Information: | The present-day building was erected in 1968. Because of this property's recent construction, it does not meet the criteria for historical significance and does not fall into the exception for properties constructed during the 50 year non-historic period. Located on the corner of South Water and Jefferson Avenue, this small one-story commercial building is a simple rectangular cube devoid of ornament. This building, characterized mainly by its coursed stone veneer elevations, is further characterized by a recessed corner entrance and a plain rectangular window on the south elevation. This small retail building was constructed in 1968 on a site occupied earlier by a livery station followed by the Standard Oil Gas Station. It was built to house the Abbots Brothers Barber Shop. The Abbot Brothers Barber Shop is not architecturally significant because it is of modern contemporary design and is less than 50 years old. As a result, this building does not contribute to the historic character of the proposed Watre Street Commercial Historic District. |
