NOTES
Additional Information:This one-story commercial building constructed of concrete block, [presently painted], is characterized mainly by two large service doors that extend across the facade from the center to the west end. A entrance with a single leafed door in the east bay and a rectangular window in the adjacent bay to west further characterizes this utilitarian vernacular building. Constructed in 1962 for the Sparta Co-op Oil Company, this concrete building replaced an earlier one-story brick building on the site constructed for the Standard Oil Company. The Sparta Co-op Oil Company building is not architecturally significant because it is of modern contemporary design and is less than 50 years old. As a result, this building does not contribute to the historic character of the proposed Water Street Commercial Historic District. The present building is of recent construction (1966, 1978) and does not match the historical nature of past buildings at this location. Earlier structures existed on this property, including the Andrew P. Anderson and Peter Olson's Blacksmith shop (1916). A blacksmith shop existed here at least until 1931. Because of this property's recent construction (1966, 1978), it does not meet the criteria for historical significance and does not fall into the exception criteria for properties constructed during the 50 year non-historic period.
