NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. THIS TWO STORY RETAIL BUILDING, CONSTRUCTED IN 1897 (SEE BIB. REF. A, E), WAS DESIGNED IN THE COMMERCIAL VERNAUCLAR, ITALIANATE AND QUEEN ANNE STYLES. IT FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, A BRICK EXTERIOR, A WOOD TRIM AND A FLAT ROOF. INTERESTING BRICKWORK EMBELLISHES THE AREA NEAR THE CORNICE LINES; THIS PATTERN IS SIMILAR TO THE NEIGHBORING STRUCTURE AT THE WEST. TWO CENTRAL WINDOWS WITH ARCHED LINTELS ARE NESTLED BETWEEN TWO LARGE, WOODEN, THREE-SIDED BAYS. THIS BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED ON THE REMAINS OF AN EARLIER 1877 STONE TOAY BLOCK, WHICH WAS DAMAGED BY FIRE IN 1897. (SEE BIB. REF. C). THE BUILDING IS IN GOOD CONDITION. DOE 6/8/92. THIS STRUCTURE WAS HISTORICALLY KNOWN AS THE WHITE HOUSE DRY GOODS STORE; THE W. J. PENHALLEGAN BUILDING (SEE BIB. REF. B); AND THE W. J. PENHALLEGON & CO. GENERAL STORE (SEE BIB. REF. D). THE GENERAL STORE CONDUCTED BUSINESS AT THIS SITE FROM 1897 TO 1929. (SEE BIB. REF. A, D). CURRENTLY, IT FUNCTIONS AS RETAIL SPACE. THIS BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972. 2012- "W. J. Penhallegon was born in Mineral Point, son of a shoemaker who immigrated from Cornwall. He rebuilt this building after the fire of 1897 destroyed his previous store. Other businesses here were M. Wearne Millinery; Dr. Homer Ludden's office; Hill's Gambles store; Skogmos; High Street Fashions; and the Mineral Point Medical Center." -from "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press.
