DESIGNED IN THE QUEEN ANNE AND CLASSICAL REVIVAL STYLES, THIS TWO STORY RETAIL BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1867. (SEE BIB. REF. A). IT FEATURES VARIOUS EXTERIOR MATERIALS, RANGING FROM WOOD, TO CAST IRON, TO PLATE GLASS. A FULLY DETAILED CORNICE AND A PARAPET WITH A DATE PLAQUE AND A SUNBURST MOTIF DISTINGUISH THE UPPERMOST PORTION OF THE BUILDING. DOMININATING THE SECOND STORY ARE DOUBLE BAY WINDOWS WITH PAIRED PILASTERS FLANKING EACH BAY. CORINTHIAN CAPITALS ADORN THE MULLIONS AND PILASTERS. THE FORMER STONE BUILDING WHICH ONCE OCCUPIED THIS SITE IN 1857, WAS COVERED BY A METAL FRONT IN 1892, AN ADDITION MADE UNDER THE OWNERSHIP OF CHARLES HENDRA. (SEE BIB. REF. B). THIS STRUCTURE IS IN GOOD CONDITION.

THIS BUILDING WAS HISTORICALLY KNOWN BY MANY NAMES, INCLUDING THE OTIS-HENDRA BUILDING; THE THOMAS OTIS BUILDING (SEE BIB. REF. A); KENNEDY FANCY GOODS (WEST STORE); WATERS FRUIT AND CONFECTIONARY (EAST STORE) (SEE BIB. REF. C); AND THE HENDRA BROTHERS GROCERY AND CROCKERY STORE [1900] (SEE BIB. REF. D). THE GROCERY BUSINESS OCCUPIED THIS SITE FROM 1867 TO 1900. (SEE BIB. REF. A). OTHER OCCUPANTS OF THIS STRUCTURE WERE JACKSON AND HENDRA IN 1871, AND A CONFECTIONARY AND SEWING MACHINE STORE IN 1884.

THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972.

From "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press:
"The most striking feature of this building, the ornamental sheet metal facade, was manufactured by the Mesker Brothers in St. Louis, MO and installed in 1892 when local architect John Charles enlarged and remodeled the original strucure for Charles Hendra's grocery. Hendra's parents were from Camborne, Cornwall; he was born in New Diggings, Wisconsin.

The underlying stone and brick building was constructed in 1868 by Hendra and Vincent, replacing a frame building occupied by Kennedy's fancy goods store. The frame building was probably the American House, an inn purchased in 1857 by Thomas Jefferson Otis who was from Wheelock, Vermont. Other businesses to occupy this building were Hendra Brothers Grocery and Crockrey Store; Paynter & Tonkin; the Universal Grocery Company; Mark's IGA; Johnson Block; and the Bertram Financial Group."

From "Mineral Point Tribune", April 29, 1868:
"Mssrs. Hendra & Vincent have commenced the east wall for a fine two story stone or brick building, on the lot on which the frame house occupied by Kennedy's Furnishing Store stands - the old building to be removed."
