Historical Background This house was the home of John Hagen, Lake Superior fisherman. Historical Significance As the home of John Hagen, this house is closely associated with late nineteenth and early twentieth century commercial fishing in the Chequamegon region. It is locally significant in the area of Social History under National Register Criterion A as the embodiment of the lifeways of Madeline Island fishermen. Description The walls and roof of this cross gable house are clad in wood shingle. The house rests on a stone foundation. The bay window in the front-facing gable was added by John Hagen after initial construction. Architectural Significance This house is typical of late nineteenth century year-round residences on Madeline Island, and is similar to rural residences of the period in the rest of Wisconsin. |
