THE LYSANDER CUTLER POST PF THE GAR WAS ORGANIZED IN WAUSAU IN 1882. THE MONUMENT WAS DESIGNED AND EXECUTED BY ALEXANDER ROBERTSON IN 1886.

"Civil War veterans formed the Lysander Cutler Post of the Grand Army of the Republic in 1882. In 1886, the 22-foot-high staute of a Union soldier was cut from Marathon County granite and placed on the courthouse square. It was moved to the present Marathon County Courthouse grounds in 1955."
