Additional Information: | HABS WI-303-C. Unprocessed field note material exists for this structure (N498). Significance: Building 40, Greenhouse and Storage, was constructed for the Northwestern Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in 1924, with two additions in 1928 and 1936. It is significant as 1) a utilitarian building type closely related to the park-like landscape planning of the Home branches, 2) a center for occupational, educational, and recreational activities for Home members and Veterans Administration patients, and 3) a support facility for therapeutic and laboratory activities of the hospitals of the Home branch and the Veterans Administration. The building's use spans the last years of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, the establishment of the Veterans Administration, and the creation of the Department of Veterans Affairs. |
