NOTES
Additional Information: William H. Metcalf was undoubtedly one of Milwaukee's principle movers and shakers of the 19th Century. Not only was he a partner in a multi-million dollar buisness, but his list of civic accomplishments could stand alone among other leaders of the day. Metcalf was born in New York City in 1821 and died in 1892. In 1835, when he was 14, he worked in the counting room of Spofford and Tileston. In 1842 he formed a partnership with Charles T. Bradley, also of the same firm. They both came to Milwaukee in 1843 and started the Bradley & Metcalf Co. They created a national distribution of wholesaleshoes and boots. Metcalf built the Layton Art Gallery, incorporated the Milwaukee Sanitarium Association, was president of the Wisconsin Unitarian and Independent Churches, erected a statue in memory of Juneau, and was director of the Milwaukee National Bank. HOUSE ORIGINALLY FRONTED ONTO JUNEAU AVE. BUT WAS MOVED TO THE PRESENT LOCATION IN 1904 WHEN THE SUMMERFIELD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH WAS BUILT. The Italianate additions have since been stripped of all its ornamentationand the center block had its overhang removed. -1979 Part I approved: 10/1/90. Another map code is 7/22 on the LUQS #360 map.
