ROUND ARCHED ENTRY, STONE CHURCH W/ SQUARE FRAME TOWER Resurveyed 2021: Old Calvary Church is situated on the east side of STH 42. It abuts the sidewalk and faces the highway immediately to the west. It is a simple hip roof structure, construction on which was completed in 1925. Walls are all of quarried stone and mortar. Four symmetrically placed, one-over-one-light windows are located on the north sidewall as are three windows and one door (the latter the farthest to the east) situated on the south sidewall. The east endwall has no openings. Centered in the west endwall is a projecting bell tower in which the primary entrance is located. It consists of paired doors, above which is a large, semi-circular transom. Electric lanterns flank the doorway. Tall, narrow, single-light windows are found on the west sidewall flanking the entry-way and tower. The tower itself is sheathed with narrow, clapboard-like siding as it reaches above the entryway and its transom. The south, west and north sides of the tower each contain a centered cross. Land for the proposed church was offered in 1912 by Egg Harbor resident Mrs. Anna Manny. Given its durability and attractiveness, stone from a quarry immediately across the street was used for the building’s construction. Most of the work, which occurred slowly, was done by local residents, skilled workers being retained as needed. The structure was completed and services first held in 1924. Calvary was a non-denominational church that subsequently joined the Evangelical Church, which later merged with the Brethren Church and thereafter the Methodist Church. It is today a component of the United Methodist Church, though regular services are now held in the adjacent church building on which construction started in 1963. |
