NOTES
Additional Information:1990: This house is one of four red brick dwellings clustered around the NE corner of Fremont and Maple Streets. Exhibiting subdued Queen Anne chararcteristics, it features a two-story front gable with windows on the first and second floors set in recessed panels with arched and corbeled brick. These features are nearly identical to those of the John Reed House at 129 S. Sixth Street (PI 20/8), and suggest the same architect/builder may have designed or constructed both residences. The south wall of the house has a full-height bay window with a brick arch on the southwest corner. Windows are double-hung 1/1 sash with segmental arches. A brick chimney extends from the combination hip and gable roof, which is covered with asphalt shingles.
Bibliographic References:River Falls Journal, 1 September 1898: "George Theodore Smith has commenced building a house at the corner of Fremont and Maple Street east of public school." Note that this house is not on the exact corner; however, its is possible that this is the house referenced in the newspaper citation. River Falls Journal, 3 June 1900; "Ole Olson of Battle Lake, Minnesota buys the brick house erected by GT Smith." RFJ, 29 October 1903: "Frank Matteson has the Ole Olson brick house on the west side." Tax rolls, 1899, owner GT Smith ($750 valuation; not separated out); 1900, owner GT Smith with Ole Olson written in parentheses ($950); 1904, owner Matteson.
