Additional Information: | 2024 DESCRIPTION The Hans Lochen & Sons garage is a one-story heavy equipment storage facility constructed at the west corner of S. Water Street and E. Pittsburgh Avenue. Corresponding to the curvature of S. Water Street adjacent to the banks of the Milwaukee River, the building has an irregular trapezoidal footprint that was constructed in at least four phases: circa 1938, 1947, circa 1955, and circa 1963. A small one-story office building was constructed at 175 S. Water Street between 1938 and 1951. In 1947, the eastern half of the extant building was constructed as a separate but adjacent building with elevations fronting on both S. Water Street and E. Pittsburgh Avenue (presently 240 E. Pittsburgh). The third portion of the building was completed between 1951 and 1955 adjoining the west elevation of the 1947 building and fronting on E. Pittsburgh Avenue (presently 230 E. Pittsburg Avenue). The last portion was constructed in the vacant space of the “L” created by the 1947 and circa 1955 volumes, absorbing the original office building. Despite these phases, the building has a uniform appearance consisting of a cast concrete plinth course, loadbearing red brick masonry walls, and a flat roof finished with cast stone coping. A continues brick soldier course spans the south and northeast elevations above a series of vehicular garage bays. Some bays have been converted into glazed pedestrian entrances or large display windows. The remaining vehicular bays, except one, are enclosed with glazed wood panel overhead garage doors which are likely original. Inset panels are engraved with “Hans Lochen & Sons Inc.” are in the south and northeast elevations and a smaller inset panel reading “H. Lochen & Sons” is above the original office entrance on S. Water Street. |
