Additional Information: | Harry and Caroline Kroll began serving food at a series of Green Bay hotels in 1931 and opened their first restaurant along Main Street in the Town of Preble in 1936. The restaurant and bar quickly became popular and well-known for their butter hamburgers. The business was sold by Harry and Caroline Kroll to Harry’s sister and her husband, Isabel Kroll Schauer and Dick Schauer. Kroll’s east location expanded to the rear in 1945 with a diner-style restaurant and remodeled the interior in 1947. A non-extant downtown location was opened the same year. By the 1950s, a set of seven cabins, used seasonally as a motel, was constructed at the rear of the building. These cabins were removed by the late 1960s. When the downtown Kroll’s location closed in 1974 a new branch was opened on the west side of Green Bay. The same year, the interior of the east side location was extensively remodeled. |
