| Additional Information: | Description and historical information from the 2023 WisDOT survey report for STH 32/N. Lake Drive, Fox Point, Milwaukee County:
This one-story, L-shaped Contemporary/Ranch style house is sheathed with a Lannon stone veneer and much of the house is topped with a gabled roof. However, a flat-roofed wing with wide overhanging eaves extends west from the intersection of the two gabled wings and terminates at its westernmost end with a dominant chimney. This flat-roofed wing also includes the home’s entrance, which is comprised of a single door flanked by sidelights. Two large banks of plate-glass windows are visible on the home; one along the entrance (north) elevation, while the other is along the rear (east) elevation.
This house, designed by architect Edmund Schrang for contractor William F. Thalman, was originally built for Stanley H. and Irene Michelstetter and completed in 1951. The grandson of one of the earliest pioneer Jewish families in Wisconsin, Stanley was born in Milwaukee and graduated from UW-Madison in 1911. In 1915, he married Irene Stern, who was born in Denver, Colorado and attended Agnes Scott College in Atlanta. They had one son, Donald. Stanley was, in the 1920s and 30s, the general manager of the Reliable Knitting Works in Milwaukee, after which he was the president of the Imperial Knitting Company for fifty years. The Michelstetters remained in the house until selling to Donald L. and Elise Bell in 1970. |
