Additional Information: | 2023: The basement barn was constructed circa 1896. It is a gambrel roof, rectangular plan dairy barn with hay hoods and doors in the north and south gambrel ends. The exterior is clad with vertical wood plan; the roof is clad in metal. Additions have been constructed along the west and south elevations. A cast concrete silo is adjacent to the east elevation. According to Memoirs of Vernon County (1907), John C. Baglien succeeded his parents on the farmstead in Timber Coulee and “devoted [it] to diversified agriculture and stock-growing. He is one of the successful tobacco-growers of the county.” Born Johans Baklien (1846) in Skabu, Nordrefron, Gudbrandsdalen, Norway, Baglien also served as post master at the neighboring Lovass Post Office and operated the store at the intersection. Baglien also donated land for the neighboring Skogdalen Church and the converted Skogdalen Church Parish Hall. The John C. Baglien Farmstead, known as the Woodbine Stock and Dairy Farm, consists of a historic-age house (246125), basement barn (246126), gambrel roof agricultural outbuilding (246127), and gable roof machine shed (246128) constructed in the former Lovass hamlet of the Town of Christiana, Vernon County. The John C. Baglien Farmstead is associated with historic settlement patters in the region, specifically that of Norwegian immigrants and Norwegian Americans. The Farmstead is further associated with agricultural practice of combined dairy production and tobacco cultivation in the Coon Creek Valley and the broader Northern Tobacco District. |
