Additional Information: | This old Wisconsin Central Railroad Depot sat in the location of the Soo Line Depot between 1898 and 1914, when it was moved to this location. It is a long, rectangular, building of one and one-half stories with a gable peak on the main elevation. It has clapboard-clad walls, a gable roof with overhanging eaves and large brackets, and many mostly symmetrical openings. Upper level openings are filled with small four-light windows. First story openings are filled with six-over-six light double hung sashes and wooden doors. On the main elevation, there is a shed-roofed bay with six-over-six light sashes and a shed-roofed entry pavilion. In its original location the depot had public spaces on the first floor and quarters for the station agent on the upper floor. When the depot was moved, it was expanded and turned into two sets of living quarters; an apartment for the track section chief and living quarters for track crew members. Two kitchens were added and the interior staircase altered. The interior has a combination of plaster-covered walls and wainscot-covered walls, wooden floors, and simple flat wood trim around doors and windows. This depot was located where the current depot sits and was built in 1898 when the original 1884 depot burned. It was moved for the construction of the current depot in 1914, then enlarged and converted into quarters for railroad track crew members. It is unclear when it ceased to be a crew quarters, but in the later 20th century it was sold to private owners. In 2014, it was sold to the Colfax Railroad Museum. |
