Additional Information: | 2023: This c.1905, two-story commercial building has a rectangular plan, flat roof with parapet, and rusticated concrete-block foundation. It is clad in red brick. The front (west) facade has fixed replacement storefront windows, a recessed main entrance, and a secondary entrance to living quarters on the second story. Brick detailing is present on the parapet. Exterior trim molding separates the first and second stories, as well as the second story and cornice. The second story features a bay window with a single fixed window flanked by one-over-one, double-hung windows. The side (north) elevation has an additional storefront window and a second-story projecting bay that is similar to that on the front. A second-story porch and entrance are on the rear (east) elevation. All windows have stone sills and lintels. The building has been partially modified with an altered storefront entry and replacement windows. August Marquardt first occupied the building and operated Marquardt’s drug store. A pharmacist by the age of 18, Marquardt also opened a soda fountain and lending library in the building. Gustav Naffz, who operated two other drug stores in Wausau and Madison previously, purchased the property in 1913. It continues to house retail on the first story with living quarters above. |
