Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. DOT bridge B-06-0893. April 2001-The STH 88 Bridge across Elk Creek in Gilmanton is a 15.8-foot high, steel Pratt truss bridge comprised of one 120.0 span and full retaining reinforced concrete abutments. The total length is122.4 feet. This through truss bridge features a 30.5 feet wide deck and a roadway width of 23 feet. The bridge is further characterized by a metal railing along the sides of the bridge and long the approaches to the bridge. A metal, 7.0-foot wide pedestrian walkway across Elk Creek extends from the east side of the bridge. This walkway, which was part of the original design of the bridge, features its original decorative diamond patterned metal railing along its east side. The bridge rest on the remains of the mill foundation that forms part of the north abutment. The STH 88 Bridge is located toward the south end of the commercial district of the village 0.1 mile north of the junction of STH 88 with STH 121 and adjacent to Rainbow Lake Park. The STH 88 Bridge at Gilmanton was erected according to plans drawn by the bridge section of the Wisconsin Highway Commission in 1926. It replaced a Buffalo County metal through truss bridge formerly on the same site. This Pratt truss bridge received a new concrete deck designed by WisDOT in 1975. The contract for the construction of the new deck was awarded to the Pertzch construction Company in 1980. The STH 88 Bridge at Gilmanton was further altered in the 1980s when the knee braces were removed by the highway department. In addition, the north portal was bent when it was damaged and the south portal was repaired when it was damaged. 2014 survey of STH 88 indicated the bridge has been demolished since its survey in 2001.
