Additional Information: | UNCERTAIN ORIGINAL PURPOSE 2017- "Constructed c.1885, the Gilmanton Public School is a two-story, rectangular-plan, front-gable building with a raised foundation of rusticated concrete block and walls clad in vinyl replacement siding. The gable roof is covered with standing seam metal and a small brick chimney projects above the ridgeline near the north (rear) of the building. Evenly spaced windows are located on the side elevations of both the upper and lower levels, both of which historically housed classroom spaces. A modern metal door is located on the west side of the front (south) facade, and a larger opening on the east side has been infilled. Windows are one-over-one, double-hung, replacement sash throughout. Historic photographs indicate that the property originally had an ornate cupola and an oculus window in the peak of the south gable. Two of the three windows on the upper story have also been removed. Entrances were historically located on both sides of the front facade; the extant entrance provided access to stairs to the upper classroom, while the infilled entrance opened onto the lower story. Constructed as the community of Gilmanton’s first public school, the building was subsequently relocated (likely c.1910, when a four-room graded school was built nearby). Although the earliest image shows a stone foundation, an early twentieth-century photograph shows the property at its present location with the current foundation. The property currently functions as the Gilmanton Town Hall." -"STH 88: CTH U to STH 37", WisDOT#7730-02-30, Prepared by Mead & Hunt, Inc., (2017). |
