Additional Information: | 01/2021: The property includes a ca. 1900 two-story cube dwelling (a) associated with a group of circa 1970s outbuildings (b-h). The ca. 1975 barns and outbuildings include a machine shed (b), an animal barn (c), two large adjacent machine sheds/outbuildings (d–e), a smaller barn (f) with a large (non-historic-age) L-shaped addition, a grain silo (g), and an additional large front-gabled barn (h). Although mostly reclad, the outbuildings are visible in 1978 aerial imagery and are presumed to be of historic age (ca. 1975 or earlier); however, map research suggests they replaced earlier historic-age outbuildings (Earth Explorer 1978). The two-story dwelling (a) features an asphalt-shingled pyramidal roof with a deck and a central brick chimney, replacement vinyl siding, replacement vinyl windows, a vinyl bay window addition on the primary façade that dramatically alters the resource’s original fenestration pattern, and a stone perimeter wall foundation. The primary façade includes a single door below a small, half-hipped front porch with decorative wrought iron supports. A half-hipped rear addition and a two-bay garage addition on the north side elevation do not appear to be of historic age.
The single-story, front-gabled machine shed (b) includes a standing-seam metal roof and cladding, a central entry bay, and two enclosed windows on the side elevations. The large side-gabled animal barn (c) is directly behind Resource (b) and features a standing-seam metal roof and cladding, a concrete slab foundation, and several open bays across the primary façade. The two large side-gabled machine sheds/outbuildings (d and e), located directly behind Resources (b) and (c), also feature standing-seam metal roofs and cladding, but additional details were not visible from the public ROW. The smaller front-gabled barn (f), located southwest of the dwelling, includes standing-seam metal cladding. Historic aerial imagery indicates the footprint of the resource was altered around 1982 with the large side addition. The metal grain silo (g) is located adjacent to Resource (f). The final large front-gabled barn (h) is located behind the silo and includes a metal roof, metal siding, and a large sliding metal door.
According to the 1914 and 1918 Grant County Plat Maps the Frustenberg family owned the property at the time of the dwelling’s construction. It appears on the 1900, 1904, and 1908 Lancaster quadrangle maps (USGS 1900, 1904, and 1908) as well as the 1918 Plat Map (Geo. A. Ogle & Company 1918). Resources b-h are visible in 1982 aerial imagery (NETR 2020). A 1955 aerial photograph depicts the house (a) and at least seven outbuildings, including two at the approximate locations of resources b and c (NETR 2020). Resource b appears to have been reclad or replaced between 1955 and 1982 (NETR 2020). Resources d through h were added by 1982 and replaced historically associated outbuildings (NETR 2020). |
