Additional Information: | Surveyed in July 2020 by UWM-CRM as part of the WisDOT USH 63 reconstruction project. The Jeffery Block is a one-story, Twentieth Century Commercial-style building. The building was constructed around 1905 as two commercial spaces. The building is clad in brick with a flat roof and parapet. The front elevation is two bays wide, each containing a storefront. The southern (left) storefront has aluminum-framed windows and a recessed entryway. Above the large storefront windows are transoms with ghost lettering reading, from left to right, “SCHOOL SUPPLIES,” “SODA FOUNTAIN,” “DRUGS,” “PRESCRIPTIONS,” and “GIFTS OF / ALL KINDS.” The storefront windows are surrounded by wood pilasters and a modest wood entablature with brackets, assumed to be modern. A cutout sign projects above the front door advertising the building’s current use as an art gallery. Above the storefront, the parapet has a rectangular frame outlined in white brick. This frame currently contains a sign reading “DANCING BIRD ART STUDIO / AND GALLERY.” Above the frame is a corbelled cornice and a stone or cast stone name plate reading “JEFFERY BLOCK.” The northern (right) storefront is separated from the southern bay by a square pier that projects above the parapet line. The northern storefront has two-light modern windows and a modern recessed door. The transoms have been covered with opaque panels, and a sign reading “LAKES TITLE” is located above the entryway. A smaller reading “LAKES TITLE / BARBERSHOP” projects from the face of the elevation at the north corner. The storefront is capped by a similar rectangular panel and parapet. The north (Grove St.) elevation is three bays wide. Each bay is capped with a similar rectangular panel. The westernmost bay contains a modern glass door and a modern window. A striped barber’s pole and sign are affixed to the wall near the door. |
