| Additional Information: | Surveyed in July 2020 by UWM-CRM as part of the WisDOT USH 63 reconstruction project. The Chiodo Block was built in 1922. This two-story commercial building is rectangular in plan with a flat roof and parapet. The building is clad in variegated red brick. The original storefront on 2nd Ave. has been replaced with a stone veneer half wall, vinyl siding, and aluminum-framed windows of various sizes. Additional openings along Elm St. (the south elevation) have been filled with glass block and opaque panels. A lighted sign reading “CORNER / BAR / PIZZA & / CHICKEN” projects from the south elevation, and a similar painted metal sign reading “CORNER / BAR / GREAT FOOD” is affixed to the south wall face. The upper story retains its original window openings with cast stone sills and Neoclassical-style cast stone lintels with elongated voussoirs and keystones. The spaces inside the openings are currently covered with T-111 panels, and it is unknown if the original windows remain intact. The building is capped with a corbelled cornice and cast stone coping. The center of the front (2nd Ave.) elevation parapet is raised slightly and accentuated with cast stone scrolls; below this is a cast stone panel reading “CHIODO BLOCK / 1922”. |
