Additional Information: | City of Madison, Wisconsin Underrepresented Communities Historic Resource Survey Report: Marshall Colston was the president of the Madison branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 1956 through the early 1960s and played a large role in the civil rights movement in Wisconsin during the 1950s and 1960s, coordinating closely with the Milwaukee branch, and the national movement throughout its history. In 1962, Colston was appointed the vice-chairman of the Madison Mayor’s first Commission on Human Rights, playing an instrumental role in the city’s adoption of its Equal Opportunities Ordinance in 1963. Colston was also appointed to the Wisconsin Governor’s Commission on Human Rights in 1966. He moved to California in 1970. |
