Additional Information: | 2019 This Neoclassical-style bank building was constructed in 1922.19 It is situated on the south side of STH 32 (N. Branch Street) within the central section of Wabeno’s small downtown commercial district. The one-story building is clad in light colored brick and features a symmetrical temple front façade. The primary entryway consists of a modern plateglass door with metal surrounds; it is in its original opening with a stone enframement capped with a classical pediment and a denticulated cornice. The entryway is further emphasized by a flanking pair of Ionic pilasters and tall rectangular window openings hooded by an awning. Finally, a pair of square stone pilasters complete the temple front adornment. A frieze above the entryway consists of a series of stone panels, which contained the words “State Bank of Wabeno.” A row of dentils and a modern sign reading “Laona State Bank” sits below a stone pediment lined with modern floodlights. Side elevations include somewhat decorative courses of soldier bond brick cornices and evenly spaced rectangular window openings hooded by large vinyl awnings. What appears to be a c.1970s addition is found at the rear of the bank building and is slightly shorter than the height of the historic section and capped by a projecting metal cornice. The first State Bank of Wabeno was constructed in 1907 and was located in the lower level of the A.E. Lawrence Opera House. This building burned in 1907 and the bank moved to a different location in downtown Wabeno. This building was constructed in the early 1920s as the new home of the State Bank of Wabeno. |
