Additional Information: | The stone retaining wall is located along the western edge of Sunset Park Drive opposite the entrance to the northernmost parking lot and baseball diamond. Based on historic photos of Sunset Park Drive, the retaining wall was constructed c.1920. Although similar projects were undertaken during the Depression era by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in other parts of the state, no evidence was found to suggest that the wall was constructed as part of one of these programs (WPA project cards on file at the Wisconsin Historical Society for Outagamie County and the Village of Kimberly do not include a description of this work). In addition, because historic photos on file at the Kimberly-Little Chute Public Library clearly show that similar retaining walls were in place along Sunset Park Drive by 1925, it is likely that the subject wall was constructed prior to 1925 as well. The surveyed Sunset Park Drive retaining wall is of stacked stone construction with irregular coursing and uneven, tiered end sections. The wall is approximately 50 feet in length. Under Criterion A: History, the wall is notable for its association with the construction of Sunset Park Drive as the surrounding area was converted to parkland. |
