NOTES
Additional Information:The Borden Milk Company entry gates were constructed c.1930 and consist of a pair of large, square concrete piers with rounded caps and stuccoed exteriors. Brick corbelling separates the squared body of each pier from the rounded caps. Steel hinges are located on the inside edges of each pier; the northern pier retains its original steel gate as well. The “Borden’s” name is imprinted in the face of the northern pier.

Today’s Grede Park was historically the site of the Thompson Malted Food Company which constructed a factory on the site in 1913; at that time, the factory was reported to be the largest producer of malted milk in the world. The Thompson operation was purchased by the Borden Milk Company in 1930 for the production of Borden brand condensed milk. The milk condensing plant operated on this site until 1969 when production ceased and the factory was closed due to low demand for the product. The factory buildings and most associated resources were demolished in 1990, with the gates preserved as the only remaining structures associated with the milk condensery that operated on the site for much of the twentieth century.
