Additional Information: | 2023 - Throughout the mid- to late nineteenth century, slaughtering and meat packing was largely a local decentralized operation in Wisconsin communities with slaughterhouses and small meat markets operating in most communities and on many farms. However, the development and expansion of railroads allowed meat processing industries to centralize around transportation hubs. For this reason, the early meat packing industry in Wisconsin was heavily centered in Milwaukee; however, small regional meat suppliers operated in Brown County by the 1880s. Advances in transportation, mechanization, refrigeration, and sanitation modernized the industry and its facilities through the early and mid-twentieth century; with booms in demand and production during World War I and World War II. During the post-war era, meatpacking plants began to decentralize operations, moving or establishing new facilities closer to both livestock production areas and regional markets. On the southeast side of Green Bay, Packerland Packing Company constructed a large, new meatpacking plant in 1972. |
