Additional Information: | Constructed in 1932, St. Mary’s Catholic Church is a front-gable, rectangular-plan church clad in brick and resting on a concrete foundation. The northwest corner of the church has a square, three-story bell tower topped by a rounded square roof with a cross, which features a date plaque that reads “A.D. 1932.” The front (west) facade features a central arched entryway with double doors under a white stone transom. The entryway is framed by recessed arches with diagonal brick detailing over white stone sills that feature an embossed cross. Above the entryway is a recessed stained glass rose window framed by white decorative medallions. Windows on the original church are generally rounded arches with stained glass. Attached to the church is a large, c.2000 addition, which has replaced the historic church as the functional worship space for the congregation. Other additions include a porte-cochere at the rear (north) of the building, which features a hip-on-gable roof supported by simple, square stone pillars that provides access to the modern rectory addition at the rear. Founded in 1915, St. Mary’s Catholic Church was the second Catholic church in Phillips. The brick building was constructed in 1932 to replace an earlier wood-frame building. In 1991 St. Mary’s combined with Phillips’s other Catholic congregation, St. Patrick’s, to form a single Catholic parish in Phillips under the name St. Therese of Lisieux. The new parish was dedicated in 2004 after the construction of the new sanctuary and school additions. The 1932 sanctuary is currently used as a parish hall and the pews and alter have been removed. |
