Additional Information: | 2017- "This farm consists of a house (AHI#234299), a barn and silo (#234300), as well as a small animal building and pumphouse (#234301), machine shed and garage. The house is located significantly back from the road and shielded from direct view by foliage; however, a view from the driveway indicates that it rises two stories and has a gabled roofline (seemingly with many additions, again evidenced from an aerial). Siding appears to vinyl and windows appear to be modern replacements. The gabled bank barn, which is visible from the roadway, has a fieldstone foundation and vertical board and batten walls. A concrete block milkhouse is located at the south end, while a poured concrete silo is at its north end. A gabled small animal barn on a concrete foundation and covered with a combination of board and narrow clapboard is located adjacent to a fenced-in area in front of the barn, as is a smaller building with shiplap siding (perhaps a pumphouse). Also, what appears to be a machine shed (west of the bank barn) is visible in an aerial; however, it was entirely obscured from view by foliage and no photo could be taken at the time of survey."

This farm was established by Christian Becker, circa 1862. A native of Bayern, Bavaria, Germany, he was born in 1831. At the age of twenty-one, he came to the United States, settling in the Town of Rhine and purchased his first forty acres. After working for one year in the mining region of Lake Superior, he returned to Rhine Township and purchased forty acres from his uncle, Alois Becker; he would ultimately farm a total of 160 acres. In 1860, Becker wed Magdalena Heim and together they had sixteen children. Although Christian retained ownership of the land, it was farmed by his son Renatus (Renard) by no later than 1894. Renard (and his wife Agnes) would ultimately take over ownership, after which it was passed on to Renard’s son Anton. The property today remains in the Becker family. |
