It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. William Rahr, an immigrant from Germany, came to Manitowoc in 1847 and established a small brewery, known as the Eagle Brewery, eventually expanding into malt production by 1879. William Rahr died in 1880, and under his sons the malting production expanded. They incorporated as William Rahr Sons’ Company in 1893. Further malt expansion continued into the early 20th century, so that by the time of Prohibition, they demolished the brewery, and focused their malting buildings to produce cereals and yeast products, under the new name Cereal Products Company. In 1932, they changed the name to Rahr Malting Company, anticipating the lifting of Prohibition the next year. The next three decades saw further expansion, so that by the 1950s, Rahr Malting Company was one of the largest malt producers in the world. In 1962 Anheuser-Busch, a long-time customer of Rahrs’, purchased the Manitowoc malting facility, and operated it until 2011. In 2014 it was purchased by Briess Malt & Ingredients Company, with production beginning again in 2015. |
