Additional Information: | Lincoln School was constructed in 1956 and designed by Green Bay firm Foeller Schober Berners Safford and Jahn Architects. It is clad in brick veneer and has one-story L plan with minimal mid-century modern stylistic details. This building consists of two main masses: the administrative/classroom wing and the gym/auditorium. The administrative/classroom wing has a long, rectangular footprint that runs north-south along North 7th Street, with a flat roof with metal coping. The front (west) facade features fixed, vertically oriented windows framed by projecting brick walls at the north end. The main recessed entrance is located at the south end of the facade; it is sheltered by a metal awning. The southwest corner of the facade features glass-block accents. The south elevation features a metal awning over the vertically oriented windows at the west end and a secondary entrance. The gym/auditorium extends to the east and is oriented parallel to Main Avenue. It has a square footprint and a flat roof with metal coping. The south elevation features equally spaced pilasters and is void of windows. A large paved area and playground are located at the rear. Fixed metal and awning windows are on the north elevation. The earliest documented schoolhouse, Lincoln School or “Lawtontown” School (nonextant), was constructed in De Pere in 1865. It was located at the corner of Fort Howard Avenue and North 6th Street (now Lawton Park). A new school also known as the Lincoln School (or Lawtontown School) was constructed at the northeast corner of Main Avenue and North 7th Street in 1900 as a replacement for the original 1865 schoolhouse. In 1956 the subject property was constructed as the new Lincoln School at the same location. It was built to serve students from the west side of De Pere. The Green Bay Montessori Children's World School opened at this location in 1978. The school maintains its original footprint. |
