Additional Information: | 2016- "This two-story commercial vernacular storefront was constructed c.1910. It is clad in concrete block and rests on a concrete block foundation. The building features a flat, tiered roof with an ornamental metal cornice decorated with laurels and cone-shaped finials. The intact front (west) facade displays a large storefront window, recessed glazed entry door, and secondary entrance; both doorways have large transom windows above. Second-story windows are replacement, one-over-one, double-hung sash with concrete sashes and sills. Additional, small, one-over-one windows are located on the side (south) elevation. Other notable decorative features include the cast-iron pilasters and cornice with medallions that adorn the storefront and bands of rusticated concrete along the facade. The 1919 Sanborn Fire Insurance map of Pardeeville indicates that this building functioned a barber shop. Building materials may have been obtained from Wing Brothers Concrete Block Manufacturing, which was founded in 1905 and located one-half mile east of downtown.(1) This local facility was part of a larger trend of metal-pressed concrete block construction across Wisconsin that lasted from approximately 1905 until 1925, peaking in the early 1910s.(2)" -"STH 22: STH 16-CTH CM/Barry Rd", WisDOT#6050-00-01, Prepared by Mead & Hunt, Inc. (2016). |
