Additional Information: | 2016- "This one-story, false front commercial building was built c.1880. It is of frame construction with horizontal wood siding, and its foundation is not visible. The roof form is front gable covered in asphalt shingles; it features a false front parapet with a wood cornice along the front (west) facade. Windows consist of original, fixed, four-pane storefronts on the facade; sidelights and a transom within the recessed central entrance; and two, one-over-one, double-hung sash fixtures on the east end of the side (north) elevation. Decorative wood paneling is present on the storefront, which features pilasters, a knee wall, and the original glazed door. A large c.1915 concrete block addition extends from the east elevation at the rear of the building. A sign mounted over the central entrance says “TIMES.” This building is labeled as a jewelry and millinery store on the 1919 Sanborn map of Pardeeville.(1) It also served as the headquarters of the Pardeeville-Wyocena Times newspaper during the mid-twentieth century. The newspaper was founded by Charles Williams of Green Bay as the Independent Times in 1888. It then became the Pardeeville Times from 1889 to 1921, the Pardeeville-Wyocena Times from 1921 to 1949, and finally the Mid-County Times from 1950 until 1995. Local resident H.P. Thompson purchased the paper in 1901 and managed the publication until his death in 1954; three generations of the Thompson family would serve as editors of the newspaper over a period of approximately 80 years.(2) It largely covered local activities, and upon its closing in 1995 the paper was described as a “weekly chronicler of births, deaths, bowling gossip and civic events.”(3)" -"STH 22: STH 16-CTH CM/Barry Rd", WisDOT#6050-00-01, Prepared by Mead & Hunt, Inc.
