| Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property named 'Wausau Municipal Airport'. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. All private hangars are located west of the 1927 Hangar, on land acquired from the Marathon County Home and Hospital in 1958. Beginning in 2000, parcels of airport land were leased to private owners and corporations, all of whom built detached, square, front-gabled hangars on their parcels. There is very little difference between one hangar and the next, and no architectural interest to speak of. Each hangar has a concrete foundation, metal siding, and metal, front gabled roofs. Large bi-fold or tip-up hangar doors, some containing windows, dominate the front elevations. A smaller pedestrian door is located either to one side of the hangar door or around the corner of the building. The pedestrian doors are sometimes sheltered with a metal awning or canopy. Interior spaces are large, square, and unobstructed. Some hangars have special comfort features, such as heated floors, where others only serve the basic functions of storage and protection. All of these hangars were constructed after 2000. |
