Additional Information: | CA 1900 PHOTO SHOWS TOWER, RAILINGS & COVERED WRAP AROUND PORCH ROUND CNR TOWER W/ CONICAL ROOF, WOOD SHINGLED GABLES, SIDE BAY W/ CLIPPED BRACKETED CNRS, WIDE WOOD SHINGLED BELT COURSE ON HOUSE SIDE, POLYGONAL FRONT BAY W/ MOULDED EAVES OVER PORCH. This 2 1/2 story Queen Anne house was constructed in 1894. It is irregular in plan with clapboard walls and an asphalt-shingled irregularly-shaped roof. The front elevation faces north and is asymmetrical in plan. A 1-story, flat-roofed front porch with paired, square, columnar supports projects from the center of the facade. Within the porch is a central doorway with small1-over-1 windows on each side. The second story of the facade is dominated by a three-walled bay window containing 1-over-1 windows in each side wall and a larger single-pane window in the center wall; leaded-glass transoms are located above each of these windows. A small 1-over-1 window is located just east of this bay; a larger 1- over-1 window with leaded-glass transom is located just west of the center bay. A pair of 1-over-1 windows is located above the center bay, just below the gable. A rounded tower with a conical roof is located at the northwestern corner of the building. The building is in good condition and retains a moderate degree of integrity. As a representative of the Queen Anne style, the house's primary distinguishing features are its irregular roof shape, corner tower, bay window, and leaded glass transoms. However, the original patterned shingles in the gable ends have been covered by newer siding, thus eliminating one of the key features that defines the Queen Anne style. In addition, the house is not especially unique within the context of Queen Anne houses in the City of Marinette. Of the 46 others that have been recorded in WHPD, several are more elaborate examples that currently appear to retain higher degrees of integrity (see 2802 Hall Avenue, AHI# 22881 and 2125 Riverside Avenue, AHI# 23080, among others). For these reasons, the house is not considered eligible for listing under Criterion C. This building was previously surveyed in 1988. Subsequent changes include the addition of new clapboard siding throughout. The AHI record was updated with the new survey date and changed appearance. |
