NOTES
Additional Information:A building permit indicates that John E. Dirk and Walter L. Dodge were the carpenters who built this auto garage in 1914 for Henry C. Ney and Henry Shanke. Ney (b. abt. 1877) and his wife Louisa lived in the building’s upstairs quarters and the business remained in operation until 1933. In 1930, Joe and William Pessin were arrested at this location for operating an illegal liquor cutting plant where bootleg alcohol was repackaged as premium spirits. The building was home to Milwaukee 4-Wheel Drive Company in the 1940s and the Schilling Garage in the 1950s and 1960s. Today, it houses the MedaCare Ambulance Company. 2015- "This two-story (plus), brick commercial building displays limited Craftsman-style detail and is topped with a side-gabled roof with parapeted endwalls. The front roof slope contains two gabled dormers outfitted with tripartite, double-hung sashes. The first level is divided by a vehicle passageway - the large window openings to either side are infilled with concrete block. Above the passageway is a recessed balcony guarded by a simple wooden railing. A doorway and four six-over-one, double-hung sashes are on the wall behind the balcony, which is protected by an overhanging roof slope supplied by carved wooden brackets. Remaining fenestration generally consists of one-over-one, double-hung sashes. A building permit indicates that John E. Dirk and Walter L.
