Additional Information: | This county airport was originally proposed and constructed in 1944. According to tax records, the propertyn is comprised of 400 acres, encompassing two runways [turf (230539) and asphalt (230541)], multiple hangars [including one made of concrete (230539)], and a terminal building. The older turf runway is Runway 16/34, located southeast of the terminal and concrete hangar. It was created in 2944 with the building of the original airport facilities. It measures 1240 x 120 feet, and remains in use during the summer months. The historic resources extant at the Sawyer County Airport provide an example of a regional airport property type. Key elements of the property type are present on the grounds, including runways, a terminal building, and airplane hangars. However, only one of those historic resources - the 1944 turf runway - is old enough to be eligible for listing on the NRHP. The Concrete Hangar, Asphalt Runway, and Terminal Building, constructed from 1966 to the mid-1970s, do not meet the criteria for listing at this time. In addition, none of the structures possess particularly fine architectural details that would recommend them for listing in spite of their ages. The Sawyer County Airport is notable for its association with the history of recreation and tourism in Hayward and the surrounding area. For many years, the airport provided a necessary method of transportaion for visitors to the area, during the same time period in which tourism became a vital element of the region's economy. That being said, the majority of resources present on the grounds are of modern construction and do not date to the time period of this context. In addition, Cable Union Airport, located 20 miles to the north, likely played a greater role in the history of tourism in the area, due to its proximity to Mount Telemark, the largest recreational enterprise in the region during the mid-to-late 20th century. This property had not been previously surveyed in WHPD. New AHI records were created for the historical resources on the property. |
