NOTES
Additional Information:2015:
Bridge B-03-0002 is an open spandrel concrete arch bridge that carries South Main Street north-south over the Red Cedar River. The bridge was constructed in 1919 and pre-1949 historic photographs show a Neo-Classical balustrade with globe light standards and raised, cantilevered sidewalks on both sides. In 1949 the bridge was widened with prestressed concrete girders to create two additional lanes on the east side, and the 1919 portion now carries southbound traffic. The cantilevered sidewalk remains on the west side, but has been removed on the east to accommodate the widening of the deck. The superstructure was replaced in 1978 and the bridge now has a simple concrete parapet with a double pipe railing.

2015- "Bridge B-03-002 is a two-span bridge that carries South Main Street north-south over the Red Cedar River. The bridge has a solid concrete pier and abutments, and the concrete deck has four travel lanes with raised concrete sidewalks on either side and a simple concrete parapet with a double pipe railing. The western half of the bridge, which carries two lanes of southbound traffic, is an open-spandrel concrete arch. The eastern half, which carries two lanes of northbound traffic, is a prestressed concrete girder structure.

The concrete arch portion of the bridge was constructed in 1949 (widening an earlier two-lane structure built in 1919). Plans from 1949 show a Neo-Classical balustrade with globe light standards and raised, cantilevered sidewalks on both sides. In 1978 the 1919 portion, which carried northbound traffic, was replaced with prestressed concrete girders. The cantilevered sidewalk remains on the west side, but the superstructure of the 1949 portion was replaced in 1978 and the ornamental balustrade and light standards have been removed."
