Additional Information: | Relocated from unknown site 2016- This c.1890 one-room schoolhouse is a one-story front gable building with walls clad in clapboard, resting on concrete block footings, and the gable roof is covered in asphalt shingles. The main entrance is centered on the front (west) facade, sheltered by gable roof entry portico with chamfered posts and wood fish-scale shingles in the gable end. An oculus window in the peak of the front gable has been filled with plywood and the gable end has been sided with asphalt shingles. The north and south (side) elevations each feature three evenly spaced windows. A shed roof historic-age wing clad in asbestos siding extends on the rear (west) elevation. Windows are two-over-two, wood, double-hung sash, although the rear wing has two small two-light fixed windows and one three-over-one, double-hung unit. The interior was not accessible at the time of survey, although a neighboring property owner informed surveyors that the building had been relocated to its present site. Research did not yield any information regarding the school's historic location. As late as 1930 Ashland County had 38 one-room schools, at least four of which were located along or near the project corridor, although none were within 1 mile of the present location of the subject property. Schools were located in the communities of Cayuga, Morse, and Shanagolden, and two others were located on the north and south sides of Gordon Lake. Photographic evidence indicates that the subject property is not the Shanagolden School, but no historic photographs were available to confirm whether the schoolhouse was moved from another community. -"STH 13" WisDOT ID #1610-08-31/74, Prepared by Mead & Hunt, Inc.
