Additional Information: | 2016- This c.1920 tourist cabin complex consists of an office/restaurant and six cabins located on the east side of STH 13, adjacent to the western shore of Gordon Lake. The office/restaurant and two smallest cabins are sited on a circular driveway and face the highway, while the remaining cabins are set back beneath the trees. A horseshoe pit is located adjacent to the highway northeast of the office/restaurant. The one-story vernacular front gable office/restaurant (AHI No. 230045) has walls clad in a mixture of board-and-batten wood siding, asbestos shingles, wood drop siding, and vinyl replacement siding, and rests on a concrete foundation. The clipped gable roof has a central brick chimney. The off-center main entrance is located on the front (west) facade, flanked by a grouping of four windows beneath a retractable awning. A shed roof extends from eaves of the south (side) elevation beneath two gable dormers, and an exterior stair provides access to a small deck at the southeast corner of the main block. A gable roof kitchen wing with a modern restaurant exhaust vent extends from the rear (east) elevation. A secondary entrance with a small gable portico supported by knee braces is located on the side (north) elevation of the rear wing, and a shed-roof vestibule is located at the northeast corner of this wing. With the exception of six-over-six vinyl sash in the dormers, windows are three-over-one, wood, double-hung sash in paired and single configurations. The two smaller cabins (AHI Nos. 230049 and 230050) are nearly identical; both feature a one-story front gable main block with a smaller gable roof wing at the rear. Two larger cabins on the property (AHI Nos. 230053 and 230054) are one-story front gable buildings with central brick chimneys and shed roof wings on one side elevation. A small hip-roof cabin (AHI No. 230051) is located behind the office restaurant, and a larger front gable cabin (AHI No. 230052) clad in asphalt replacement siding is immediately adjacent. With the exception of AHI No. 230052, the cabins are clad in a mixture of clapboard and drop siding, resting on concrete footings, and the roofs are covered in asphalt shingles and feature exposed rafter tails. Most windows are one-over-one, wood, double-hung sash, although some openings have been infilled with plywood. -"STH 13" WisDOT ID #1610-08-31/74, Prepared by Mead & Hunt, Inc. (2016). |
