NOTES
Additional Information:The Dickinson Funeral Home is a one-story, Neo-Colonial funeral parlor built in 1963. The walls are clad in brick and
asphalt shingles cover the hip roof. A small octagonal cupola with a conical metal roof is centered on the ridgeline of the
main block, and a metal crematorium chimney projects from the northwest corner of the building. Gable wings project at
either side of the front (south) facade and rear (north) elevation, with vinyl replacement siding and small lunette vents in
the gable ends. The main entrance is centered on the front facade, and features sidelights and a transom beneath a
peaked header. A flat roof portico with square posts and a roofline balustrade shelters the main entrance. Flat roof
portes-cochere with roofline balustrades extend on the east and west (side) elevations , sheltering side doors. Windows
are eight-over-eight vinyl sash with concrete sills, flat brick headers, and nonfunctional shutters, with the exception of
those of the northwest wing (which houses the crematory), which are a mixture of louvers and glass block. A two-bay
garage with brick walls and an asphalt hip roof is located at the northwest corner of the property.
The Dickinson Funeral Home business was established in 1955 at an earlier location in a residential property on
Caledonia Street. As the company expanded, the Jackson Street facility was constructed on three city lots in 1963. An
undated photograph on the company's website indicates that the portes-cochere were a later addition, and the crematory
was added in 1988. Interior access was not possible at the time of survey.

The property is a modest example of a postWorld
War II purpose-built funeral home and has been altered with replacement siding and the addition of portes-cochere
and a crematory. The property is virtually identical to Kohl 's Community Funeral Home in Waupun, Dodge County (AHI#
224291), which was determined not eligible in 2013. La Crosse has a number of funeral parlors, and the Dickinson
Funeral Home company operates three additional funeral parlors in the greater La Crosse area. The Jackson Street
parlor does not display any significant features that would distinguish it from other postwar funeral homes in the area.
