Additional Information: | The newly inventoried building is a two-story vernacular building with a hip-with-deck roof and clapboard siding. It was built ca. 1900 (Figure 3). The building likely had a two-story cube form, but a two-story gabled addition was later constructed on the rear (southeast) elevation. The addition is clad in clapboard siding with an irregular fenestration pattern. A small single-story gabled utility shed was subsequently built onto the two-story addition. Formerly known as the Anglim Hotel, Hadlie's Upper Dells Hotel features a symmetrical front (northwest-facing) facade, with a central entrance and two flanking one-over-one windows. The second floor features a central pair of double-hung windows, which are in turn flanked by one-over-one units. The fenestration pattern on the side elevations is irregular. A porch wraps around the front and southwest elevations. The porch exhibits modest spindlework detailing. Hadlie's Upper Dells Hotel (formerly known as the Anglim Hotel) was evaluated under Criterion C. The building has functioned as a hotel since its construction ca. 1900. Historic photos indicate minimal alterations. Many of the window openings have been reduced in size, and a small utility shed was constructed on the rear of the building in the midtwentieth century. Some of the spindlework detailing has been removed, but overall, the hotel retains a fair degree of exterior integrity. The interior could not be accessed. Hadlie's Upper Dells Hotel is a vernacular building exhibiting modest Queen Anne or Eastlake porch spindlework. However, it is not a fully executed example of either style. While it retains a fair degree of integrity, it is not architecturally distinguished enough to meet National Register standards. A literature search did not reveal significance under Criteria A or B. Hadlie's Upper Dells Hotel is not eligible for the National Register. A Determination of Eligibility is not recommended. |
