MITCHELL JOANNES ONE OF FOUR BROS WHO FOUNDED JOANNES BROS FOOD BROKERS. Mitchell Joannes House (902 S. Madison Ave.), whose owner co-founded the largest wholesale grocery north of Milwaukee. Designed by Henry Foeller and built in 1901, this delightfully eclectic house has Belgian brick walls rising two and one-half stories to a steeply pitched hipped roof. A diamond-pattern brick frieze under the eaves adds texture, and so do the rusticated flat arches and keystones above the windows. The focal point of the complex massing is a colossal Ionic portico with overhanging cornice. |
