Additional Information: | 2012- "This small building shares party walls with its neighbors and appears on historic photographs prior to the construction of either building. It has a facing of red brick with a bit of brick corbelling over a centrally-placed bay window that suggests the Queen Anne style. The storefront was modernized and consists of a large show window in a wood frame and two modem entry doors, one to the first floor business and the other to the second floor living space. There is a modern awning over the transom area of the storefront. It is unclear when this building was initially constructed, but a dated photo shows it existed prior to 1909. The 1891 plat map showing buildings, though shows a different type of building on this lot. Initially a commercial building, after the Darien Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1916, it located in this building. A historic photo shows that the first story show window area was converted into a large door for the fire equipment, but that the current entrances are in the same location. The photo also shows an original metal cornice that is not extant. By 1933, the fire department had moved to the north end of the west side of Wisconsin Street, near a building that housed village equipment (not extant). After the fire department moved out of this building, it was home to a series of commercial businesses." -"Request for SHPO Comment and Consultation on a Federal Undertaking", Prepared by Carol Lohry Cartwright, Historic Resources Consultant, (2012). |
