Additional Information: | THIS EARTH SHELTER HOUSE HAS AN ARCHED, SOD-COVERED CONCRETE ROOF AND IT WAS DESIGNED BY GERALD KLODT, THE OWNER, AND WAS BUILT BY COLUMBIA EARTH SHELTER, WHICH WAS LOCATED IN PARDEEVILLE, WIS. This earth-shelter house has an arched, sod-covered roof is partly bermed and has an arched, earth-covered roof. The exposed wall on the north (street) elevation has vertical board siding, one window, and an entrance door. The exposed south (rear) elevation has numerous windows that provide light and passive solar benefits. The interior is on multiple levels; lower levels are partly below grade and include a greenhouse that opens to the dining room/kitchen area. The house was designed by Gerald Klodt, the owner, and was built by Columbia Earth Shelter located in Pardeeville, Wis. Gerald Klodt received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fine arts, a PhD in industrial design, and became an environmental designer, consultant, and educator specializing in earth shelter design. He presented seminars and classes on underground housing for the University of Wisconsin-Extension in the late 1970s and early 1980s. His book, “Earth Sheltered Housing” was published in 1985. Menzi Behrnd-Klodt studied history and archives administration at UW-Madison and later obtained a law degree. At the time this house was built, she was an archivist for the Wisconsin Historical Society. |
